striker Luis Suarez joined Inter Miami on a one-year contract to reunite with close friend Lionel Messi.

Suarez and Messi, along with Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, will reunite as part of the Barcelona team that won La Liga four times and won a Champions League title in 2014–2020. They will play together for Miami in the 2024 season in the MLS, US Open Cup, North American Cup C1, and Leagues Cup.

To welcome Suarez, Miami parted ways with striker Josef Martinez after the 2023 season ended. Their attack will have Messi, Suarez, Leonardo Campana, Facundo Farias, Robert Taylor, Robbie Robinson, and young players.

In 2023, Suarez played prominently for Gremio in the Brazilian championship at the age of 36, when he scored 24 goals and assisted 17 times in 52 matches. However, he is still struggling with a knee injury, so he may not play every game for Miami.

“Those who see me doing my daily activities will think I can’t play football anymore,” Suarez said on December 18. “My first steps every morning when I wake up are very painful because my knee cartilage is damaged and touching the bone. I can’t even play with my children. Before every match, I have to take three pills and pain-relieving injections.”.

Despite the pain, Suarez still wants to play with Messi one last time before retiring. Not only are they teammates on the field, but these two players are also close friends, often meeting each other on their days off. Before playing for Barca, Suarez also shone with Ajax or Liverpool.

Suarez is 36 years old, having grown up at Club Nacional in Uruguay. He went to Europe to play for Groningen in the Netherlands for just one season before being picked up by Ajax. Suarez joined Liverpool at the age of 24, scoring 82 goals in 133 matches. His achievements at Barca are equally impressive, with 198 goals in 283 matches. Before joining Gremio, he played briefly for Atletico Madrid and Nacional.
