The Portland Trail Blazers are a bad NBA team. When the front office decided to trade franchise icon Damian Lillard last offseason, the organization was capitulating on the 2023-24 season. They were no longer focused on the playoffs. They were focused on developing for the future. Yet that Blazers team, which was missing several of their best players, nearly beat the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, before a comeback nabbed the Dubs a 110-106 win.
The Warriors did not deserve a victory with their performance, but they were lucky to be facing a bad team. Despite the flashes, the Dubs continue to look more like a .500 team that will be fighting for a spot in the Western Conference play-in than a championship contender. But the Warriors did get a win they desperately needed.
The Warriors’ offense was atrocious early, with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and Draymond Green combining to make just four of their first 22 attempts from the field. Chris Paul was similarly quiet off the bench, finishing the game with just 2 points in more than 20 minutes of action.
Moses Moody and Dario Šarić were all effective off the bench, combining to score 25 points. However, Jonathan Kuminga, who did not get inserted until the second half, who was arguably the Warriors’ second-best player. He scored 13 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the field.
The solid bench effort helped, and Curry slowly heated up as the game went on. The spark turned into a fire in the second half and Steph led the Warriors to a comeback. Curry finished the game 8-for-18 from the field (5-for-13 from three) with a game-high 31 points.
While the Blazers nearly led for the entirety of the game, Thompson returned to the floor after a break in the fourth and immediately knocked down a triple to make it a one-possession game. A tip-in layup from Wiggins and a three-pointer from Curry on Golden State’s subsequent possessions gave the Dubs their second lead of the game with four minutes left in regulation. After some light back and forth, Curry knocked down the dagger triple.
Now 10-11 on the season, the Warriors will travel across the country to face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday at 5:00 PM Pacific.
